COURSE CURRICULUM

The Wind Turbine Technician program at St. Lawrence College is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education combining theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for a career in the wind energy industry. The program spans four semesters, covering foundational courses such as Technical Communications and Technical Mathematics, which equip students with essential communication and mathematical skills for technical environments. Early electrical courses introduce students to basic electrical theory, the Canadian Electrical Code, installation methods, renewable energy systems, and data literacy, laying the groundwork for advanced electrical and electromechanical studies. In the second semester, students deepen their understanding of electrical fundamentals, including power generation, semiconductor theory, and circuit analysis, while gaining hands-on experience with AutoCAD, instrumentation, electronics, and workplace safety. They also explore wind power systems and fire alarm systems, enhancing their knowledge of safety and security technologies. The third semester advances students' skills in programmable logic controllers (PLCs), electrical theory, fluid power, mechanical systems, power distribution, and variable frequency drives, focusing on industrial applications and system maintenance. The final semester focuses specifically on wind turbine technology, with courses on the mechanical construction and maintenance of turbines, composite blade repair, hydraulics, safety training, and advanced electrical systems unique to wind turbines. Students also learn about maintenance techniques, turbine technician roles, and the importance of SCADA systems and grid integration. Throughout the program, emphasis is placed on safety, teamwork, and environmental awareness, with practical training in fall arrest, rigging, hoisting, and ladder rescue. Industry-standard tools and software are integrated throughout the curriculum, ensuring students graduate with the skills needed to enter the rapidly growing renewable energy sector with confidence and professionalism.
