COURSE CURRICULUM

The Motive Power Technician Diploma Program spans four semesters and equips students with the comprehensive knowledge and hands-on skills needed for success in the rapidly evolving automotive industry. In the first semester, students build foundational skills through courses such as Basic Computer Applications, Introductory Mathematics for Trades Technicians, and Work Practices 1, which covers safety, measuring tools, and oxy-acetylene welding. Core technical courses include Engine Systems 1, Electrical, Electronics, and Emissions Systems, Drive Train Systems 1, and Suspension, Steering and Brake Systems 1. In the second semester, students progress to more complex systems through Technical Mathematics, Skilled Trades Applied Communications, and Air Conditioning Systems. Engine Systems 2 and Electrical, Electronics, and Emissions Systems 2 continue the sequence, while Drive Train Systems 2 and Suspension, Steering and Brake Systems 2 deepen their technical training. Semester three includes courses like Customer Relations and Communications, Blueprint Reading and CAD, and Hydraulics. Electrical, Electronics, and Emissions Systems 3 covers hybrid systems and onboard computer diagnostics. General education courses such as Ethics and Critical Thinking support broader skills development. In the final semester, students learn Automotive After Market operations, Microcontrollers, and participate in a real-world Technology and Business Practices lab running a mock automotive shop. Courses such as Work Practices 2, Engine Systems 3, Drive Train Systems 3, and Suspension, Steering, and Brake Systems 3 further advance diagnostic, repair, and service skills. The program blends technical training with business, communication, and ethics education, ensuring students are prepared to work with traditional and modern automotive systems including hybrids and EVs. With instruction by experienced faculty and a curriculum aligned with Ontario’s apprenticeship levels, graduates are job-ready and well-positioned to complete practical work hours toward their Automotive Service Technician certification.
