COURSE CURRICULUM

The Environmental Technician program offers a comprehensive curriculum over four semesters designed to equip students with essential knowledge and practical skills for careers in environmental science and technology. In the first semester, students study foundational subjects including General Biology, Fundamentals of Chemistry, Communications, Environmental Issues and Solutions, Introductory College Mathematics, and Computer Applications, focusing on developing both scientific understanding and communication skills. The second semester builds on chemistry with an emphasis on applications relevant to environmental health, introduces technical communications, and offers practical training in Geographic Information Systems, ecology, ecological sampling, microbiology, and a general education course. The third semester advances into freshwater ecology, site characterization, environmental analysis, environmental legislation, occupational health and safety, and statistics with experimental design, alongside another general education course. These courses deepen students’ technical expertise and understanding of regulatory frameworks and safety protocols. In the fourth semester, students engage in ecotoxicology, where they learn to assess chemical impacts on ecosystems through field and lab work. A four-week work placement provides hands-on experience in real-world environmental settings, enhancing their practical skills and industry awareness. Additional courses in this semester cover advanced freshwater ecology, air quality management including legislative and technological aspects, expanded environmental analysis focused on water and air quality, solid waste management, and water treatment and distribution, culminating in preparation for the Ontario Ministry of the Environment’s Entry Level Drinking Water Operator certification exam. Throughout the program, students also complete general education courses to broaden their academic perspective. Overall, the program integrates theoretical learning with applied skills, preparing graduates to meet the demands of the environmental sector and contribute effectively to sustainability and public health initiatives.
