COURSE CURRICULUM

The Community and Justice Services program spans four semesters and is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience needed for careers in law enforcement, corrections, community advocacy, and support for at-risk populations. In the first semester, students build foundational knowledge through courses in the Canadian criminal justice system, ethical reasoning, health and wellness, communications, human development, workplace readiness, and general education, establishing essential competencies for professional practice. Semester 2 expands on this foundation with criminology, interpersonal and group dynamics, community advocacy, health and wellness, documentation and report writing, criminal law, and professional self-growth, further preparing students to work effectively in justice and community service settings. In semester 3, students advance to applied skills with courses in the management of disruptive behaviour, advanced legislation, working with diverse populations, interviewing and case management, trauma-informed practice, and a field placement seminar, alongside their first community and justice services field placement, providing hands-on experience. Semester 4 focuses on career readiness and professional application, including workplace readiness and career planning, a second field placement, addictions and harm reduction, intervention advocacy and crisis prevention, and innovative approaches to meet community needs, with general education delivered online. Across all semesters, students develop critical thinking, communication, problem-solving, empathy, cultural competence, and reflective practice skills, ensuring graduates are fully prepared to support individuals and communities in complex justice and social service contexts.
