COURSE CURRICULUM

The Animal Care program at St. Lawrence College is a one-year, hands-on curriculum designed to prepare students for careers in animal care through extensive practical and experiential learning. In the first semester, students develop foundational skills in livestock care, exotic and wildlife handling, veterinary medical terminology, grooming, pet health and behavior, and surgical support, while also gaining proficiency in clinical math, computer skills for veterinary assistants, and ethical considerations for careers in animal care. Laboratory experiences, including canine and feline handling, allow students to apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios under supervision. The second semester builds on these skills with courses in veterinary office procedures, basic clinical lab procedures, dog grooming, obedience training, pet nutrition, and advanced pet health practices. Students also explore cruelty investigations, shelter management, and laboratory animal handling to gain a comprehensive understanding of the field. Field placement opportunities provide immersive, real-world experience in animal care settings, reinforcing both technical and professional skills. By combining animal handling, clinical procedures, office and marketing skills, and workplace readiness, graduates of this program are well-prepared to enter a variety of roles in animal care, veterinary support, grooming, shelter management, and related industries, contributing to the welfare of animals and the satisfaction of their owners.
