COURSE CURRICULUM

The Personal Support Worker program is structured to provide students with a strong balance of theory, lab practice, and real-world clinical experience across two semesters. In Semester 1, students build a solid foundation in professional PSW practice through courses such as Foundational Principles of PSW Practice, Human Body Structure and Function, and Communication and Professionalism. Learners also gain essential skills in End of Life Care, preparing them to support clients and families with compassion and sensitivity. Supervised lab and theory courses allow students to practice core personal care skills in a controlled environment, while the first clinical placement introduces them to hands-on caregiving in a real healthcare setting. Semester 2 expands on this foundation by focusing on more complex client needs and advanced competencies. Students study Common Health Conditions, Mental Health and Dementia Care, and Medication Enhancement to better support individuals with physical, cognitive, and mental health challenges. Additional supervised labs and a second clinical practice placement strengthen practical skills and confidence. The program concludes with PSW Practice Consolidation, where students integrate knowledge and experience to demonstrate readiness for employment. Together, these courses ensure graduates are well prepared to provide safe, respectful, and person-centred care in long-term care, community, and home support environments.
