The Medical Laboratory Assistant/Technician program offers a comprehensive blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for a successful career in medical laboratory settings. In the first semester, students study human anatomy and physiology in Laboratory Anatomy, exploring how body systems function and maintain health, while Laboratory Mathematics equips them with the calculations and data analysis skills vital for lab work. Laboratory Communications develops professional communication skills tailored to healthcare environments, and Laboratory Techniques provides hands-on experience with laboratory equipment and safety procedures. Laboratory Foundations introduces the profession, healthcare system, quality management, and safety legislation. Laboratory Skills 1 teaches specimen collection and microscopy, emphasizing safety and professional behaviour. The second semester builds on this foundation with courses such as Histology 1, covering EKG procedures and tissue examination, highlighting ethics and patient care. Chemistry 1 introduces clinical chemistry and biochemistry principles, preparing students for clinical laboratory work. Laboratory Skills 2 advances skills in blood sample collection and specimen processing, focusing on safety and legal standards. Microbiology 1 offers knowledge of clinical microbiology, including pathogen identification and aseptic techniques. Blood Science covers hematology and transfusion science, blending theory and practical lab methods. Finally, a field placement provides supervised, real-world experience where students apply technical and professional competencies in healthcare labs, performing tasks such as blood collection and specimen handling. This placement also fosters reflective practice and professional growth, ensuring graduates are prepared for certification and successful employment in diverse medical laboratory environments.
