COURSE CURRICULUM

The General Construction Carpentry Techniques program is structured across three semesters to provide students with comprehensive knowledge and hands-on experience in residential, commercial, and industrial construction. In the first semester, students begin with General Construction Math, learning essential measurement and calculation skills using both metric and imperial units. They also take Fundamental Skills in Carpentry, which covers safe use of hand and power tools and introduces the residential construction process. Safety, Materials, and Tools teaches industry regulations, health hazards, PPE, rigging, and material applications, while Plans, Specifications, and Codes 1 develops an understanding of construction stakeholders, blueprints, and freehand sketching. Additionally, students improve their communication skills in Skilled Trades Applied Communications and gain proficiency in office software through Basic Computer Applications.The second semester is divided into two parts. The first half focuses on residential construction, including site preparation, foundations, framing, roofing, and finishes in Residential Construction. Plans, Specifications, and Codes 2 deepens blueprint reading skills, while Estimating, Calculations, and Layout 2 covers material estimation and cost calculation for residential projects. The latter half shifts focus to commercial construction in ICI Construction, covering foundations, concrete work, masonry, metal framing, and stair building. Plans, Specifications, and Codes 3 and Estimating, Calculations, and Layout 3 further develop blueprint interpretation and estimating skills for commercial projects.In the third semester, students study Computer Aided Design, producing architectural and mechanical drawings to enhance communication. The program culminates in the Culminating Carpentry Project, where students apply their knowledge and skills on a large-scale residential construction project, either onsite with a construction firm or under instructor supervision. This practical experience solidifies their readiness for employment in the construction industry.
