COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in Celtic Studies at St. Francis Xavier University follows a structured two-year plan designed to guide students through both academic coursework and the development of a substantial thesis. In the first year, the program begins in August or September with students meeting department members to discuss potential research directions and to identify a primary supervisor and thesis committee. By the end of the academic year in April, students are expected to have selected a thesis topic in consultation with their supervisor. Throughout the year, they complete required coursework, including a specialized course in Old Irish, which builds essential linguistic and analytical skills for Celtic studies research.In the second year, the focus shifts heavily toward research and writing. By September, students formally present their thesis topic to the department and provide their supervisor with a detailed timeline outlining when each section of the thesis will be completed. At the end of October, students submit a progress report to keep their supervisor updated. By the end of January, the full draft of the thesis must be submitted for review. Those aiming for May graduation must submit a pre-final version by February 15 to both their supervisor and internal reader, who will offer feedback. Students are expected to incorporate this feedback and submit an updated thesis in early March. If the thesis meets the required academic standards, it will be forwarded to an external reader for evaluation, or upon request by the student.The final step in the process is a formal thesis presentation and examination at the end of March. After this defense, students make any required revisions and complete the final submission steps, concluding the program. This detailed timeline ensures that students stay on track while developing advanced research and academic writing skills in a supportive and structured environment.
