COURSE CURRICULUM

The Engineering program at St. Francis Xavier University offers a well-rounded and rigorous two-year foundation designed to prepare students for further studies in a wide range of engineering disciplines. In the first year, students complete 36 credits that establish a strong base in the fundamental sciences and engineering principles. Required courses include Chemistry (CHEM 121 and 122), Physics (PHYS 121 and 122), and a suite of foundational Engineering courses such as ENGR 121, 122, 128, 132, 136, and 147. To ensure strong communication skills, students are also required to take 6 credits in writing-intensive courses. These may be chosen from specific offerings in the arts, humanities, and music, or others with departmental approval, encouraging students to think critically and articulate technical ideas clearly.The second year consists of 33 credits and introduces students to more advanced and specialized topics in engineering. Core second-year engineering courses include ENGR 211, 221, 222, 223, 224, 232, 237, and 242. In addition, students choose a 9-credit discipline-specific track that aligns with their intended field of engineering. These tracks include Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Environmental, Industrial, and Mechanical Engineering. Each discipline features targeted courses—for example, Chemical Engineering includes ENGR 212, 227, and CHEM 221, while Electrical Engineering includes ENGR 238, 246, and 250. This tailored structure allows students to deepen their understanding in areas of interest while maintaining flexibility for transfer into accredited engineering programs across Canada. Overall, the first two years at StFX provide both the academic depth and the hands-on experience necessary for success in upper-year engineering studies and future professional practice.
