COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Physics at StFX combines a strong foundation in core physics principles with supporting coursework in mathematics, chemistry, and related sciences, providing students with both theoretical knowledge and practical laboratory experience. In the first years of the program, students complete introductory courses in physics that cover mechanics, waves, electromagnetism, and modern physics, alongside mathematics courses such as calculus and differential equations to build the analytical skills essential for advanced study. As students progress into upper years, the curriculum includes courses in classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, electromagnetic theory, optics, and experimental physics, with labs integrated throughout to reinforce conceptual understanding with hands‑on investigation. Specialized electives may allow students to explore areas such as computational physics, astrophysics, condensed matter, and modern technological applications, while advanced labs and research projects provide opportunities to develop experimental design and data analysis skills. Many students also engage in paid research with faculty, contributing to publications and conference presentations. The program’s structure supports a variety of career and further study pathways, including graduate work in physics or related fields, and prepares graduates for roles in industry, technology, education, and research.
