COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mathematics and Statistics curriculum at StFX offers a comprehensive progression from foundational concepts to advanced theoretical and applied studies. At the 100 level, students build core skills in mathematical reasoning, calculus, business mathematics, and introductory statistics, covering topics such as logic, number theory, functions, probability, and differential calculus, with specialized streams for engineers and business students. The 200-level courses expand mathematical depth through linear algebra, multivariable calculus, differential equations, discrete structures, data modelling, and applied statistics for science and engineering. At the 300 level, students engage with higher-level topics including real analysis, modern algebra, combinatorics, numerical methods, mathematical modelling, financial mathematics, regression analysis, probability theory, and statistical methods, allowing exploration of both pure and applied mathematics. Advanced 400-level courses focus on specialized and rigorous study areas such as complex variables, partial differential equations, statistical learning, data mining, modern algebra, and real analysis, alongside selected topics and independent research. Students may complete an honours thesis and senior seminar in mathematics or statistics, gaining research, analytical, and communication skills. Overall, the program offers strong theoretical foundations combined with real-world applications, preparing graduates for careers in industry, analytics, education, and research or further graduate studies.
