COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Data Science at StFX is an interdisciplinary degree that blends mathematics, statistics, and computer science with practical, real-world applications to prepare students for data-driven careers. The curriculum begins by building a strong foundation in core data science skills, including data management, statistical programming, analytical methods, and computational tools, ensuring students understand how to access, clean, manipulate, visualize, and interpret structured and unstructured data using modern software like R and other data tools. As students progress, they engage in project-based learning that integrates subject-specific knowledge from areas such as business, biology, medicine, sport, or earth sciences, allowing them to tailor their studies to their interests and career goals. This hands-on approach emphasizes both theory and application, encouraging students to solve real problems with real data and helping them develop critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and technical skillsets essential for roles such as data analyst, data engineer, health analyst, or machine learning professional. Co-op placements and domain-specific projects are also integral to the program, reinforcing experiential learning and enhancing readiness for employment or graduate study in the rapidly evolving, data-intensive landscape. Students also gain exposure to ethical, social, and professional issues in data science to prepare them for responsible and effective practice in the field.
