COURSE CURRICULUM

The Computer Science (CS) program at StFX offers a comprehensive curriculum covering both foundational and advanced topics in computing, preparing students for careers in technology, research, and interdisciplinary fields. At the 100-level, courses such as CSCI 128 introduce coding and problem-solving using intuitive programming environments, while CSCI 135 focuses on computer applications essential for academic and professional work. CSCI 161 and 162 teach programming fundamentals, data structures, and algorithmic thinking, forming the basis for more advanced study. At the 200-level, courses like CSCI 215 examine social and ethical issues in computing, CSCI 223 introduces data science, and CSCI 225 explores coding applications in health analytics. Core technical courses such as CSCI 255, 263, 275, and 277 cover advanced data structures, computer organization, database systems, and discrete mathematics. The 300-level curriculum expands into specialized areas, including reinforcement learning, evolutionary computation, computer graphics, biomedical computation, algorithms, natural language processing, mobile development, networking, and operating systems. At the 400-level, students engage with advanced topics such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, software design, programming languages, and parallel computing. Honours students can complete a thesis (CSCI 490) or participate in senior seminars to gain research experience. StFX’s CS program emphasizes hands-on learning, research engagement, and preparation for diverse computing careers.
