COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biology program at St. Francis Xavier University offers a comprehensive and immersive study of living organisms, integrating classroom learning, laboratory work, and field experiences to provide students with a deep understanding of life from cellular mechanisms to global ecosystems. First-year courses such as Intro Cell Biology (BIOL 111) and Diversity of Life (BIOL 112) establish foundational knowledge in cell structure, function, and organismal diversity, while specialized courses like Microbes in Human Biology and Microbiology for Nursing introduce students to microbiology in human health contexts. In the second year, students explore Animal Biology, Plant Biology, Introductory Ecology, Molecular Cell Biology, and Human Anatomy & Physiology, developing analytical and experimental skills essential for advanced study. Third-year courses emphasize comparative physiology, population biology, coastal marine ecology, microbiology, biostatistics, and fisheries and aquaculture, with opportunities for research through Junior Seminar and Biological Research Experience. Fourth-year offerings, including Comparative Endocrinology, Behavioral Neuroscience, Evolutionary Medicine, Animal Behaviour, and Honours Thesis I & II, allow students to engage in original research, advanced analysis, and critical inquiry in contemporary biological topics. Electives and directed studies provide additional flexibility for specialization. With small class sizes, active faculty research, and field-based learning, StFX equips students with practical, analytical, and research skills, preparing them for careers in health, environmental science, conservation, or graduate studies.
