COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biochemistry concentration within the Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at St. Francis Xavier University provides a structured, four-year program designed to give students a comprehensive understanding of the chemical processes essential to life. In the first year, students build a strong foundation with courses in Chemistry (CHEM 101/102 or 121/122), Biology (BIOL 111/112), Physics (PHYS 101/102 or 121/122), and Mathematics (MATH 106/107, 121/122, or 126/127), establishing the critical knowledge needed for advanced study. The second year introduces students to Biochemistry, exploring the molecules that sustain life and their functions, while the third year focuses on Advanced Biochemistry, connecting molecular and cellular processes to human health and disease. In the fourth year, students engage in specialized courses such as Medicinal Chemistry and Bio-organic Chemistry, applying their knowledge to real-world challenges in medicine, industry, and environmental contexts. Throughout the program, students gain expertise in Analytical Chemistry, including instrumental techniques, data collection, statistical analysis, and experiment design, as well as Organic Chemistry, understanding biochemical reactions and functional groups. Genetics courses cover DNA structure, function, and gene manipulation, providing a complete view of molecular biology relevant to biochemistry.
