COURSE CURRICULUM

The Major in the Bachelor of Arts and Science in Health at StFX is designed to provide students with a well-rounded, interdisciplinary education that spans the scientific, social, and humanistic dimensions of health. To fulfill the requirements of the major, students must complete a structured combination of core, required, designated, and elective courses. The core health curriculum consists of eight courses—HLTH 111, 112, 201, 202, 301, 302, 401, and 402—totaling 24 credits. These courses guide students through foundational and advanced topics in health, including health across the lifespan, global health equity, intersectoral policy approaches, leadership, and innovation. Required courses include fundamental studies in the sciences and social sciences: CHEM 101 and 102, BIOL 111 and 112, PSYC 101 and 102, SOCI 101 and 102, STAT 101, and HLTH 203. This component accounts for 30 credits and ensures that students develop a strong grounding in research, statistics, biology, chemistry, psychology, and sociology as they relate to health. In addition, students must complete 18 credits of designated courses selected from both the arts and sciences. At least 12 of these designated course credits must be completed at the 300 or 400 level to promote advanced, in-depth learning. The program also emphasizes the importance of the Health Humanities and Ethics by requiring 12 credits in this area, which explores the cultural, ethical, and philosophical dimensions of health and care. Flexibility is provided through 36 credits of open electives, allowing students to tailor their studies to their interests or career goals. Among all courses taken, students must also complete at least 12 credits at the 200 level or higher that include a lab component, fostering hands-on learning and practical application. This academic structure equips graduates with a broad, interdisciplinary skill set that prepares them for diverse roles in healthcare, policy, research, and community health.
