COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Education (BEd) program at St. Francis Xavier University is designed for applicants who have already earned a university degree with a minimum of 90 credit hours from an accredited institution. The program offers two streams to prepare students for teaching in Nova Scotia’s public schools. The Elementary stream equips students to teach primary through grade six, requiring a broad knowledge base across multiple subject areas to meet the diverse needs of young learners. Students develop skills in curriculum planning, classroom management, and instructional strategies that integrate theory and practice, ensuring they are ready to support the holistic development of children. The Secondary stream prepares students to teach grades seven to twelve, focusing on at least two subject fields such as English, French, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, Physical Education/Health Education, Gaelic, Spanish, Business, Family Studies, Art, Music, or Drama. This stream emphasizes subject-specific pedagogy, curriculum development, and practical teaching experience to ensure graduates are fully prepared for the academic and developmental needs of adolescents. Both streams incorporate extensive practice teaching placements, professional skill development, and opportunities for experiential learning, including international placements, enabling graduates to enter the workforce as competent, reflective, and innovative educators capable of making meaningful contributions to schools and communities locally, nationally, and globally.
