COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sociology major at St. Francis Xavier University provides students with a comprehensive foundation in sociological theory, research methods, and applied social analysis. Typically declared at the end of the second year of study, the major requires a minimum of 36 credits within the discipline, offering both breadth and depth in understanding society and human behavior. Core courses include SOCI 101 and 102, which introduce fundamental concepts and principles in sociology, followed by SOCI 202 and at least three additional credits at the 200 level to build intermediate knowledge and analytical skills. Advanced courses, including SOCI 301 and 302, focus on specialized topics, research techniques, and critical applications of sociological theories. To complete the major, students must also take at least 12 additional credits at the third- or fourth-year level, allowing for exploration of specialized areas such as social movements, inequality, criminology, gender studies, cultural studies, and environmental sociology. Throughout the program, students develop key competencies in critical thinking, quantitative and qualitative research methods, communication, and problem-solving, preparing them for careers in social research, public policy, community development, advocacy, and related fields.
