COURSE CURRICULUM

The Religious Studies program at StFX offers a wide range of courses designed for undergraduate students pursuing a major, advanced major, or honours, as well as for those in other disciplines who wish to enrich their understanding of religion and its influence on human culture. Courses are accessible and engaging for students from all backgrounds, whether affiliated with a religious tradition or not, and explore themes across history, culture, ethics, and spirituality. At the 100-level, students can study introductory topics such as World Religions, Ethical Principles for Health Care Providers, and introductory languages like Greek. The 200-level courses expand into historical, philosophical, and cultural perspectives, covering subjects including Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism and Buddhism, Islam, mythology, ethical issues in world religions, religion and the environment, and contemporary phenomena like superheroes in religion. Advanced 300- and 400-level courses allow students to delve deeply into specialized topics such as the New and Old Testament, early Christian women, Buddhist thought, religion and politics, iconography of Christian art, medieval spirituality, modern Islam, and religious approaches to sexuality and diversity. Through lectures, discussions, research, and experiential learning, students develop critical thinking, analytical skills, and cultural literacy, preparing them for careers in education, social services, international relations, and further academic study in religious or interdisciplinary fields.
