COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Music program at St. Francis Xavier University offers a comprehensive and well-structured course plan that prepares students for diverse careers in music through a blend of theoretical study, performance, and creative practice. Central to the program are eleven courses in Music Theory, which include key components such as arranging and composition, basic keyboarding skills, and a songwriting lab, totaling 18 credits. Ensemble participation is another important aspect, with students engaging in eight ensemble courses over four years, earning 12 credits and gaining valuable collaborative performance experience. Students also explore the historical and analytical dimensions of music through three Jazz History courses (9 credits) and two Music History courses (6 credits), providing both context and depth to their musical understanding. Applied Performance is a major focus, with students receiving individual instruction on an instrument or voice. Bachelor of Music students complete six courses (18 credits), while Honours students take eight (24 credits). Improvisation, an essential skill particularly in jazz and contemporary styles, is covered in two dedicated courses worth 6 credits. In addition to the core curriculum, students choose two Music Electives (6 credits) to further tailor their studies to their interests. Electives outside of music allow for a broader academic experience, with Bachelor of Music students taking 13 elective courses (39 credits) and Honours students taking 10 (30 credits). In the final year, students showcase their development with a public recital: a 30-minute recital for the standard degree and a more advanced 60-minute recital with an accompanying thesis for Honours students. This curriculum provides a well-rounded education that balances technical training, creative exploration, academic inquiry, and performance, equipping graduates with the skills and knowledge to succeed as professional musicians, educators, composers, or scholars.
