COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Modern Languages at StFX integrates liberal arts education with progressive language study in French, Spanish, German, or Mi’kmaq, emphasizing both linguistic proficiency and cultural understanding. In the first year, students complete foundational Arts courses alongside introductory or placement-appropriate language classes, and many students choose to study more than one language. As they advance into the second, third, and fourth years, students focus on intermediate and advanced language instruction while exploring courses in literature, culture, effective writing, and the historical and social contexts of the languages studied. Students may pursue a major in French or Spanish, with options for advanced major or honours that include additional upper-level coursework, seminars, and, in some cases, an independent research or thesis component. Electives in German and Mi’kmaq allow students to broaden their multilingual abilities. The program strongly encourages experiential learning through service learning, community engagement, and international exchange opportunities in locations such as France or Mexico, enabling students to apply language skills in real-world settings. A French proficiency certificate is also available for students seeking formal recognition of bilingual competence. Overall, the curriculum develops strong communication, analytical, and intercultural skills applicable to careers in education, public service, international work, and global organizations.
