COURSE CURRICULUM

The History program at StFX offers a wide range of engaging courses that explore global, national, and local histories across different periods, social groups, and themes. Students can choose from 100-level courses such as Western Civilization, World History, Global Race and Ethnicity, and Empire and Plague, providing a strong foundation for historical analysis. At the 200-level, courses cover areas like Modern Germany, Canada’s pre- and post-Confederation history, Africa in the world, Medieval and Early Modern Europe, the United States, Latin America, and Japan, allowing students to study specific regions, themes, and events in greater depth. The 300-level courses include specialized topics such as Canadian women’s and gender history, immigration, race and ethnicity, social justice, European fascism, modern China, pirates and Caribbean history, the Holocaust, and cultural history, emphasizing critical thinking and research skills. At the 400-level, students engage in advanced study through thesis work, directed study, and selected topics in Canadian, European, American, and Latin American history. With small class sizes, expert faculty, and a supportive environment, StFX History students gain analytical, research, and communication skills while exploring the past’s relevance to contemporary issues, preparing them for diverse career paths and informed civic engagement.
