COURSE CURRICULUM

The Economics program at StFX offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to equip students with a deep understanding of economic theory, policy, and quantitative methods applicable at local, national, and global levels. First-year courses provide an introduction to microeconomics and macroeconomics, covering fundamental concepts such as scarcity, opportunity cost, supply and demand, production, market structures, national income accounting, money, inflation, unemployment, international trade, and government policy. At the 200-level, students build on this foundation through intermediate micro- and macroeconomics, local and community development economics, Canadian and international economic policy, environmental economics, quantitative methods, and economic data analysis, developing skills in mathematical and statistical applications. Third-year courses include advanced topics such as economic development, industrial organization, money, banking and financial markets, human resources and labor economics, health economics, international trade and finance, econometrics, natural resource economics, and public finance, with attention to real-world applications and policy analysis. Fourth-year courses focus on advanced micro- and macroeconomic theory, game theory, mathematical economics, advanced econometrics, and seminar or thesis opportunities, allowing students to engage in independent research and critical analysis of contemporary economic issues. The curriculum emphasizes both theoretical understanding and practical problem-solving, preparing graduates for careers in government, finance, business, and research, as well as further study in economics or related fields.
