COURSE CURRICULUM

The Development Studies curriculum at StFX offers a comprehensive range of core and cross-listed courses designed to provide students with a thorough understanding of development theory, practice, and global issues. Core courses include Introduction to Development Studies, Development and the Global South, Development in Canada, Gender, Development and Migration, Globalization and Development, Power, People, Planet and Profit, Development and Social Change in Practice, Gender and Development, People and Development, Theories of Development, Community-Based Development: Strategies and Practice, Internship in Development Studies, Thesis, and Directed Study. These courses focus on key themes such as social justice, community development, gender equity, globalization, sustainability, and practical strategies for implementing development initiatives. Cross-listed courses expand students’ knowledge in related areas, including Climate Change and People, Local and Community Development Economics, Local and Global Livelihoods, Canada and the “Global South”: Connections and Disconnections in the 20th Century, Economic Development I and II, Social Entrepreneurship, Global Political Economy, Global Issues, and Political Economy of Development. Together, these courses equip students with critical thinking, analytical, and practical skills necessary to engage with complex development challenges. The curriculum emphasizes experiential learning through internships, directed studies, and thesis projects, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world contexts.
