COURSE CURRICULUM

Celtic Studies at St. Francis Xavier University offers an extensive range of courses that immerse students in the languages, history, literature, and culture of Celtic-speaking peoples. At the introductory level, courses such as Gaelic Language & Culture I and II and Irish Language & Culture I teach students the basics of spoken and written Gaelic, while also exploring cultural practices, traditions, songs, and folklore from Scotland, Nova Scotia, and Ireland. Celtic Civilizations I and II provide a historical overview of the Celtic peoples from ancient times through the modern era, examining art, literature, mythology, and Christianity. At the intermediate and advanced levels, courses like Third-Year Scottish Gaelic, Celtic Music, Celtic Art, Medieval Manuscripts, Celtic Kings, Heroes and Monsters, Scottish History, and Scottish Gaelic Poetry enable students to deepen their language skills and explore specialized topics such as folklore, literature, music, and medieval manuscripts. Graduate-level courses, including Old Irish I and II, Gaelic Immigrant Literature, Scottish Traditional Culture, and Celtic Spirituality, allow MA students to pursue advanced research, translation, and cultural studies. Honours and directed study options, as well as thesis work, provide hands-on, research-based experience. Collectively, these courses foster linguistic fluency, cultural understanding, and scholarly expertise in the diverse and rich field of Celtic Studies.
