COURSE CURRICULUM

The Anthropology program offers a diverse range of courses that explore human societies, cultures, and histories from multiple perspectives, including archaeology, sociocultural anthropology, and Indigenous studies. Introductory courses such as Introduction to Archaeology and Introduction to Sociocultural Anthropology provide foundational knowledge, while mid-level courses examine specialized topics including health and illness, livelihoods, ethnographic studies, Indigenous studies, and the origins of cities. As students progress, they engage with theoretical and methodological training through courses in anthropological theory, fieldwork methods, and data analysis. Advanced offerings allow deeper exploration of themes such as tourism, development, kinship, feminist anthropology, power and change, and global health issues. The program also places strong emphasis on archaeology, with courses in North American archaeology, ancient Mesoamerica, archaeological field methods, laboratory methods, and advanced archaeological seminars. Indigenous-focused courses address Mi’kmaq and broader Indigenous issues through critical and community-informed perspectives. Senior students may undertake honours thesis research, directed studies, or applied learning experiences through Anthropology in Action. Overall, the curriculum is designed to combine theory, research, and practical experience, enabling students to develop critical thinking, analytical skills, and cultural understanding applicable to academic, professional, and community-based careers.
