COURSE CURRICULUM

The Developmental Services Worker (DSW) – Chatham program at St. Clair College prepares students to support individuals with developmental disabilities by focusing on advocacy, support strategies, and community integration.In the first semester, students are introduced to developmental disabilities, communication skills, behavioral support strategies, and person-centered planning. They also study human growth and development to understand the needs of individuals across different life stages.The second semester builds on this foundation with courses in health and wellness, assistive technologies, crisis prevention, and intervention strategies. Students also participate in field placements to gain hands-on experience working with individuals in community settings. In the third semester, students learn about mental health and dual diagnoses, social justice, advocacy, and family dynamics. They explore program planning and support services that promote independence and inclusion for individuals with disabilities. The final semester focuses on leadership in the field, ethical decision-making, and advanced intervention techniques. Students complete a capstone field placement, applying their skills in real-world settings to prepare for careers in community agencies, schools, residential programs, and healthcare settings.
