COURSE CURRICULUM

The Optician diploma program spans two years over six semesters and consists of 23 courses totaling 66 credits, providing students with a balanced education in clinical opticianry and business fundamentals. Core science courses such as Human Anatomy and Physiology, Ocular Anatomy and Physiology, and Systemic and Ocular Pathology and Pharmacology build foundational medical knowledge. Students develop technical skills through courses like Contact Lenses 1, 2, and 3; Optical Dispensing 1, 2, and 3; and Refracting Skills 1 and 2, along with Applied Refracting Skills 1 and 2. Additional courses such as Contact Lenses and Dispensing 1, 2, and 3 ensure students gain practical experience in assessing prescriptions and fitting eyewear. Specialized instruction in Ophthalmic and Optometric Skills, Introduction to Ophthalmic Practice, and Healthcare Professionalism prepares students for real-world patient interaction. Clinical training is further reinforced with two practicum placements, providing hands-on experience in professional optical settings. To complement their clinical abilities, students also complete courses like Professional Selling, Ethics and Customer Relationship Management and Introduction to Digital Productivity Applications, equipping them with retail and communication skills essential for success in optical environments. Upon completion, graduates are well-prepared for careers in optical retail, optometry clinics, and other vision care settings.
