COURSE CURRICULUM

The Ophthalmic and Optometric Assisting certificate is a one-year program consisting of 27 credits delivered through nine essential courses over two semesters. Designed to prepare students for clinical support roles in eye care, the program begins with ANPH 204 - Human Anatomy and Physiology, laying the biological foundation needed for specialized learning. Courses such as HSCI 219 - Ocular Anatomy & Physiology and HSCI 309 - Systemic and Ocular Pathology and Pharmacology dive deeper into the structure, function, and diseases of the eye, as well as relevant pharmacological treatments. HSCI 218 - Applied Ophthalmic and Optometric Assisting and HSCI 221 - Introduction to Ophthalmic Practice introduce students to the clinical environment, patient care, and the professional standards of ophthalmic and optometric settings. Technical proficiency is developed through HSCI 222 - Ophthalmic Instruments and Testing and HSCI 223 - Ophthalmic and Optometric Skills, where students learn to perform essential diagnostic procedures and patient assessments. HSCI 251 - Assisting Surgical Procedures prepares students to support surgical teams in eye care environments. Finally, PRCT 205 - Clinical Practicum provides real-world experience in clinical settings, allowing students to apply their knowledge in professional environments. Together, these courses ensure graduates are well-prepared for immediate employment in the eye care field.
