COURSE CURRICULUM

The Urban Design graduate certificate at Sheridan College offers a comprehensive curriculum that combines theoretical knowledge with practical skills to prepare students for careers in urban planning and design. In the first semester, students engage in the Urban Design Studio I course, where they develop foundational design skills through hands-on projects, while also studying the History of City Making to understand the evolution of urban form. Courses in Urban Design Research Methods and Analysis, Case Studies in Urban Design, Planning and Design Fundamentals, and Urban Design Visualization provide students with the tools to research, analyze, and visualize urban spaces effectively, totaling 21 credits. In the second semester, students continue to build their expertise in Urban Design Studio II, focusing on more advanced design projects, while exploring specialized areas such as Mobility and Wayfinding Systems, Placemaking and Public Realm, and Policy and Guidelines for government and municipal planning. Ecology and Sustainability courses emphasize environmentally responsible design practices, and students further refine their technical skills through Urban Design Visualization II. The program culminates in an Urban Design Project – Field Placement, where students apply their knowledge in real-world settings, gaining practical experience and professional connections, with the second semester totaling 22 credits. Overall, the program integrates research, design, policy, and technical skills to develop well-rounded urban design professionals.
