COURSE CURRICULUM

The Graphic Design – Creative Practice program at Sheridan spans four semesters and provides a comprehensive curriculum that blends foundational skills, applied learning, and advanced design practices. In the first semester, students develop essential abilities in design process, typography, visual design, communication design, and tools for typographic and visual design, along with design administration and communications, totaling 20 credits. The second semester builds on these foundations with courses in design methods, typographic systems, visual design systems, storytelling for design, media preparation, delivery and production, design career development essentials, and a general education elective, again totaling 20 credits. Semester three focuses on applied and strategic skills, including design strategy, applied typography, applied visual design, communication design systems, emerging technologies, project modalities for graphic designers, and another general education elective, preparing students for complex, real-world design challenges for 20 credits. In the fourth and final semester, students complete courses in design leadership, advanced typography and visual design, applied project narratives, design studio, design portfolio production, and a general education elective, enabling them to consolidate their skills, create a professional portfolio, and demonstrate leadership in design projects, completing the final 20 credits. Throughout the program, students gain hands-on experience, work with emerging technologies, and develop a strong portfolio that equips them for careers in graphic design and related creative industries.
