COURSE CURRICULUM

The Educational Support program at Sheridan provides a comprehensive, hands-on curriculum designed to prepare students for careers supporting learners with disabilities and diverse learning needs. In Semester 1, students build foundational skills with courses in technology in education, physical exceptionalities and personal care, autism spectrum disorders, essential communication skills, team collaboration, and an orientation to field experiences, totaling 16 credits. Semester 2 focuses on intellectual, sensory, and learning disabilities, assessment in education, positive behaviour strategies, and the first field seminar and placement, complemented by a general education elective, totaling 15 credits. In Semester 3, students enhance their practical skills through courses in assistive technology, teaching and learning strategies, strategies for challenging behaviour, a second field seminar and placement, and core psychology concepts, totaling 16 credits. Semester 4 emphasizes advanced knowledge in disability issues, foundations of education, communication disorders, and the third field seminar and placement, alongside a general education elective, for a total of 16 credits. The program integrates classroom learning with real-world field placements, ensuring students apply theory to practice while working directly with students with diverse needs. Emphasis on assistive technology, behavioural strategies, and communication skills, combined with guided field experience, prepares graduates to support inclusive learning environments effectively and confidently across a variety of educational settings.
