COURSE CURRICULUM

Sheridan’s Early Childhood Education program offers a comprehensive curriculum that integrates theory with hands-on experience to prepare students for professional practice. In Semester 1, students are introduced to foundational concepts such as early learning environments, play-based curriculum, child growth and development, and observational techniques through courses like Foundations of the Early Learning Environment, Child’s Growth and Development, and Observation in Early Childhood Education. Students also explore family dynamics and communication strategies essential for working effectively with children and families. Semester 2 builds on these foundations with a focus on intentional teaching strategies, responsive caregiving for infants and toddlers, and health and safety through courses like Building on Play-based Curriculum and Nutrition, Health and Safety. This semester also includes the first field placement, offering practical experience in an early learning setting. In Semester 3, students delve into working with school-age children, inclusive practices, and reflective relationships while completing a second field placement that strengthens their applied skills. Courses such as Inclusion in Early Learning Settings and Reflective Practice and Responsive Relationships deepen understanding of equity and individualized care. The final semester emphasizes advanced topics such as curriculum theory, professional ethics, and the image of the competent child. The third and final field placement allows students to refine their skills in a real-world context while completing courses like Professional Ethics and Advocacy in ECEC and The Competent Child. General education electives are incorporated into the curriculum to enhance critical thinking and broaden students' perspectives. This integrated academic and experiential learning pathway prepares graduates to become registered early childhood educators in Ontario and opens doors to further education in early childhood leadership or related fields.
