COURSE CURRICULUM

Sheridan’s Media Fundamentals program offers a well-rounded curriculum designed to build foundational skills and expose students to various aspects of the media industry. In the first semester, students take six courses totaling 18 credits. These include Essential Communications, which strengthens verbal and written communication skills; Introduction to Sound Design, where students explore audio theory and production; and Design Technology 1, which introduces core digital tools used in media creation. Visual Language focuses on visual storytelling principles, while Working in Creative Industries provides an overview of career paths and professional practices in media. Global Media and Popular Culture examines the societal impact of media across different cultures. The second semester continues to build on this foundation with five required courses and one elective, again totaling 18 credits. Courses include Telling Stories for Screens, which teaches screenwriting and narrative development; Media History, which explores the evolution of media technologies and practices; and Design Technology for Media 2, which advances digital design skills. Introduction to Media Aesthetics delves into the visual and conceptual elements that shape media content. A General Education Elective allows for broader learning in areas of personal or professional interest. Students can then choose between Media Writing Fundamentals, which hones writing for various media formats, or Introduction to Radio Broadcasting, which provides practical radio production experience. Altogether, this intensive one-year program equips students with the essential creative, technical, and theoretical skills needed to pursue further studies or begin a career in the media field. Through hands-on projects and experienced instruction, students leave with a clearer understanding of their media interests and a strong foundation for success in television, film, digital content, or communications.
