COURSE CURRICULUM

Sheridan’s Honours Bachelor of Game Design program features a progressive and comprehensive course structure that prepares students for diverse roles in the game development industry. In the first year, students are introduced to foundational concepts through courses like Foundations of Game Design, Design Thinking, Narrative Skills, Game Studies, and Programming Fundamentals. As they advance into the second year, the focus shifts to more applied skills with courses such as Play Design, Non-Linear Storytelling, Game Asset Creation, and Game Engine Scripting. Students also begin team-based projects to simulate industry development cycles. In the third year, they explore advanced topics like Systems Design, Level Design, AI Programming, and Game Feel and Aesthetics, while continuing with design documentation and production. Specialization begins in semester five with electives in Advanced Programming, Game Art, or Narrative Design. Students also engage in Game Economies, Gamification Research, and Applications of Level Design. A co-op work term and the Co-op Work Forum offer real-world experience within the industry. In semester six, students study Game Design Patterns, UX and Social Network Design, and can explore entrepreneurship, alternate controllers, or sound design. The final year centers on capstone studio projects and professional development, with two major studio practice seminars and courses in design research, portfolio development, and self-promotion. Breadth electives are included throughout the program, ensuring students graduate with both specialized expertise and a well-rounded education. This curriculum equips students with the creative, technical, and professional tools needed to thrive in the competitive world of game design.
