COURSE CURRICULUM

Sheridan’s Mechanical Engineering program offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to provide students with a solid foundation in engineering principles, advanced technical skills, and real-world experience. In the first year, students build core knowledge through courses in calculus, linear algebra, physics, chemistry, engineering design, and communication, totaling 22 credits. The second year deepens understanding with computer programming, differential equations, material science, electrical circuits, manufacturing processes, mechanics, and technical communication, along with breadth electives, bringing the total to 23 credits. The third year introduces specialized courses such as statistics, quality control, kinematics, robotics, and modeling, with students choosing between the Mechatronics or Energy streams. Mechatronics students focus on electronics principles and electro-mechanical actuators, while Energy students study energy systems and fluid dynamics. This year includes 19 credits plus a four-month internship for practical industry experience. The fourth year emphasizes design, dynamics of machines, system analysis, project management, and preparation for co-op work, alongside stream-specific courses such as applied electronics for Mechatronics or electric power systems for Energy, totaling 24 credits. In the final years, students complete capstone projects and courses on engineering economics, sustainability, ethics, and professional practice. Stream-specific advanced courses include microcontroller applications and mechatronics system design for Mechatronics students, and alternative energy systems and HVAC systems for Energy students. The program totals a carefully balanced blend of theoretical knowledge and hands-on application across core and specialized subjects, preparing graduates for careers in diverse sectors of mechanical engineering, with a focus on automation, sustainable energy, and innovative technology.
