COURSE CURRICULUM

The Furniture program offers a comprehensive eight-semester curriculum that blends design exploration, technical fabrication skills and professional preparation. In the first two semesters, students build foundational knowledge through courses in furniture design, woodworking, alternate media such as ceramics, glass, industrial design and textiles, along with drawing, digital modelling, visual communication and art and design history. As the program progresses, students advance through a structured sequence of design and fabrication courses that cover linear forms, cabinetry, storage solutions and seating, supported by studio electives, photography and breadth electives that broaden creative and critical perspectives. Upper-year studies focus on professional practices, client-based proposals, commercial furniture development and advanced fabrication methods. Students prepare for industry through work-term preparation, marketing and promotion, and a mandatory 14-week internship that provides real-world experience. The final semesters emphasize independent creative development through capstone project preparation, seminars and multi-stage execution, complemented by business models and additional breadth electives. Throughout the program, the integration of design thinking, hands-on making and interdisciplinary learning equips students with the technical mastery, conceptual understanding and professional confidence needed to succeed in contemporary furniture design and fabrication.
