COURSE CURRICULUM

The Ceramics program offers a structured eight-semester curriculum that blends technical skill-building, creative exploration and professional preparation. Early courses focus on foundational techniques such as handbuilding, wheel throwing, sketching, drawing, digital modelling and introductory ceramic technology, while alternate media courses in furniture, glass, industrial design and textiles broaden material understanding. As students progress, they move into more advanced ceramics studies including atmospheric firing, clay and glaze technology, mouldmaking, slipcasting, surface finishing and contemporary ceramic practices. Studio electives, field studies and photography further expand artistic range. The curriculum also integrates art and design history, digital visual communication, contemporary design issues and multiple degree breadth electives to deepen critical and cultural awareness. Professional development is woven throughout, with a work-term preparation course, marketing and promotion, business models and a comprehensive internship spanning 14 weeks. The final years emphasize independent creative growth through capstone project preparation, seminars and multi-stage execution, allowing students to develop a cohesive body of work. Overall, the program combines hands-on studio training, interdisciplinary learning and career-focused experiences to prepare students for diverse pathways in contemporary ceramics and design.
