COURSE CURRICULUM

The Honours Bachelor of Applied Health Sciences – Athletic Therapy program at Sheridan delivers a comprehensive and progressively structured curriculum over eight semesters, combining theoretical knowledge with hands-on clinical training. In the first year, students build foundational skills through courses in cell physiology, biomechanics, nutrition, and an introduction to athletic therapy, along with communication and general electives. In second semester, studies deepen with human physiology specific to athletic therapy, exercise physiology, protective equipment, and an introduction to health, wellness, and resilience, complemented by a practicum seminar. Year two focuses on anatomy and clinical practice, with targeted study of the lower and upper quadrants, emergency care, pathophysiology, and physical development, along with increasing field practicum responsibilities. In the third year, students explore spinal anatomy, therapeutic exercises, and injury treatment modalities, while developing clinical assessment and rehabilitation skills. Courses in clinical biomechanics and psychology of injury support their understanding of patient care. By the fourth year, the focus shifts to advanced techniques, including manual therapy, current industry trends, and entrepreneurship, preparing students for professional practice. Practicum placements expand with each term, providing consistent exposure to clinical and field environments. A research component allows students to explore topics in athletic therapy in depth. Throughout the program, anatomy is integrated across different body regions, and electives support broader academic development. Students also engage in business and research training to support entrepreneurial ventures and evidence-based practice. With a balanced combination of science, clinical skills, and hands-on experience, graduates are prepared to pursue certification as Athletic Therapists and work in diverse settings such as clinics, sports teams, or independent practice. This program ensures that students not only gain the necessary knowledge and clinical abilities but also develop critical thinking, research literacy, and professional readiness required for a successful career in athletic therapy.
