COURSE CURRICULUM

Sheridan’s Animation program offers a comprehensive and progressive curriculum that blends traditional artistic foundations with modern digital techniques across eight semesters and a work term. In the first year, students build core skills through courses like life drawing, character design, painting, animation principles, story development, and digital tools. The second semester introduces dynamic anatomy, digital painting, animation history, and advanced layout and character design, alongside a breadth elective. Year two deepens the focus with intermediate figure analysis, storyboarding, 2D and 3D layouts, action analysis, and applications in both 2D and 3D animation. The fourth semester explores figure analysis, sequential narrative, CG layouts, and digital methodologies involving sound, music, and dialogue. Students select from short film workflow, 3D character animation, or advanced 2D applications. In the fifth semester, students tackle pre-production through continuity and performance, advanced storyboarding, stop motion, and co-op preparation, with an elective choice between digital 2D character animation or 3D modeling. Semester six continues production with courses on character and costume, layout and animation production, and electives in stop motion, concept art, or 3D rigging. A mandatory co-op work term follows, providing valuable industry experience. In the final year, students complete a senior animation project and a capstone animation project, supported by business practices and electives such as advanced figure drawing, 2D final frame, or 3D frame creation. Throughout the program, breadth electives enhance creative thinking and industry readiness. The curriculum is structured to nurture both individual artistry and collaborative filmmaking, ensuring students are well-equipped for diverse careers in animation upon graduation.
