COURSE CURRICULUM

The Opticianry program’s course structure spans four semesters, combining theoretical instruction, laboratory practice, and work-integrated learning to comprehensively prepare students for professional practice. In the first semester, students focus on foundational knowledge with courses such as Introduction to Optics, Anatomy and Physiology of the Eye, Eyeglass Dispensing Theory I, and hands-on labs in fitting, measurement, and lens verification, alongside communication courses to develop professional interaction skills. The second semester advances technical expertise with Refraction Theory I and lab, Eyeglass Fabrication Lab I, Eyeglass Dispensing Theory II, and Ocular Pathophysiology, while introducing Professional Practice and Optical Business principles to provide industry context. The third semester emphasizes specialized skills including Advanced Eyeglass Dispensing, Contact Lens Dispensing Theory I and Lab, Eyeglass Fabrication Lab II, Advanced Eyeglass Dispensing Theory, and Refraction Theory II and Lab, with preparation for the first Work-Integrated Learning term, ensuring practical, real-world experience. In the fourth semester, students further refine contact lens dispensing and continuous care skills, engage in advanced labs for ocular assessment, and study Binocular Vision and Low Vision, while completing two general education courses. The second Work-Integrated Learning term consolidates students’ professional competencies, bridging academic knowledge with practical application, and equipping graduates to enter the opticianry field confidently and competently.
