COURSE CURRICULUM

The Building Systems Engineering Technician program spans two years and provides students with comprehensive theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience in designing, managing, and maintaining building systems. In the first semester, students are introduced to the fundamentals of building systems, computer-aided design (CAD), sustainable building practices, engineering principles, and mathematics, alongside communication skills essential for professional contexts. In the second semester, the curriculum advances to applied heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, site management, electricity fundamentals, workplace interpersonal skills, and mathematics, preparing students for real-world technical challenges. Students also complete work term preparation and have the option to engage in a work-integrated learning term, gaining practical industry experience. The third semester emphasizes specialized systems, including air handling, electrical systems, water treatment, plumbing, codes and regulations, and advanced CAD for building systems, while integrating general education for a well-rounded foundation. In the fourth and final semester, students focus on controls, hospital building systems, energy efficiency in large buildings, energy auditing, and fire protection systems, complemented by technical communications to support professional documentation and reporting. Through this structured progression, graduates develop the practical skills, theoretical understanding, and professional competencies needed to excel in building systems engineering, energy auditing, facility management, and related technical roles, ensuring readiness to contribute effectively to sustainable and efficient building operations.
