COURSE CURRICULUM

The Social Service Worker Accelerated (SSWA) program is a one-year intensive curriculum designed to provide students with the professional knowledge and practical skills necessary to support vulnerable populations and promote social equity. Delivered in a condensed format, the program begins with foundational courses in interpersonal communications, anti-oppressive practice, and preparation for social service work practice, emphasizing effective communication, ethical decision-making, and critical reflection. Students develop competencies in group dynamics and interviewing skills, equipping them to engage clients in meaningful, supportive interactions. The second semester focuses on applied practice through courses in service coordination, advocacy, supportive counselling, field seminars, and practicum experiences, allowing students to integrate theory with hands-on professional practice in community and organizational settings. In the final semester, students explore social welfare and policy, community practice, and advanced field placements, further strengthening their practical and analytical skills. Additionally, the program offers professional options covering specialized topics such as autism and developmental disabilities, aging, volunteer program management, intimate partner abuse, addictions, mental health, child welfare, and homelessness, enabling students to tailor their learning to specific interests. Through a combination of hybrid, online, and in-person learning, including essential field placements, the SSWA program ensures graduates are prepared to respond effectively to diverse client needs and excel in human service careers.
