COURSE CURRICULUM

Cosmetic Science program is structured over six academic semesters plus a mandatory work-integrated learning term. In Semester 1, students build foundational knowledge with courses in biology, general chemistry, lab operations, writing strategies, and math. Semester 2 advances this base with courses in biology II, general chemistry II, lab operations II, project management, and data literacy. Semester 3 introduces industry-specific content including cosmetic biology and biochemistry, microbiology and biological assays, organic chemistry for raw materials, and fragrances, along with a liberal studies elective. Semester 4 deepens formulation skills with courses in Formulation I, analytical chemistry instrumentation, pigments and powders, cosmetic regulations and quality assurance, and research and statistics, plus a work term preparation course. The work-integrated learning term (CSP881) takes place in the summer and offers flexible learning formats. In Semester 5, students take advanced courses including Formulation II, product development, sales and marketing, claims substantiation, and begin their Capstone Project in Cosmetic Science. Semester 6 completes the program with courses in plant bioactives, sustainability and corporate social responsibility, and the final capstone project, along with two additional liberal studies electives. The curriculum is designed to prepare students for a variety of roles in the cosmetic science industry through scientific rigor, creative formulation skills, and real-world experience.
