COURSE CURRICULUM

The Honours Bachelor of Engineering – Software Engineering program spans eight semesters and includes two mandatory co-op work terms, combining rigorous academic training with practical experience. Semester 1 lays the groundwork with courses in mathematics, programming, AI, mechanics, electromagnetics, and writing. Semester 2 expands into object-oriented programming, web scripting, electromagnetics, and discrete math, with a continued focus on communication and design. Semester 3 introduces database design, software deployment, circuits, optics, linear algebra, and includes a Liberal Studies course and work term prep. In Semester 4, students study operating systems, AI, chemistry, data structures, statistics, and business writing. The first co-op work term occurs in the Summer following Semester 4. Semester 5 emphasizes applied software engineering with courses in GUI design, project management, data mining, microprocessors, and software design methodologies. Semester 6 dives deeper into machine learning, embedded systems, testing, and design patterns, alongside a second co-op term in the Summer. In Semester 7, students begin a two-part Capstone Project, explore compiler design, computer networks, and ethics in engineering, select two professional options, and complete a Liberal Studies course. The final semester continues with Capstone II and offers advanced topics such as image processing and computer security, with two additional professional options and another Liberal Studies course. Professional options include quantum computing, HCI, robotics, mobile applications, open-source development, parallel programming, and natural language processing. The curriculum integrates technical depth, AI specialization, and engineering principles, equipping students with skills in software engineering, AI, and system design, while fostering leadership, teamwork, and ethical practice.
