COURSE CURRICULUM

Honours Bachelor of Therapeutic Recreation program is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience necessary to deliver therapeutic recreation interventions that enhance clients’ quality of life and promote independence. The program begins with foundational courses in anatomy and physiology, psychology, recreation and leisure studies, and the role of therapeutic recreation in wellness and health promotion. In the second and third semesters, students advance their learning in clinical biomechanics, kinesiology, adaptive recreation, leisure education, leadership, and lifespan development, while also developing skills in assessment and program planning. As students progress, the curriculum emphasizes applied learning through field placements, preparing them to implement therapeutic interventions in diverse populations and settings, including mental health, aging, and addiction. Additional coursework in professional ethics, group dynamics, and health conditions ensures graduates understand the broader healthcare context. The program incorporates a mandatory work-integrated learning term, allowing students to apply their skills in real-world environments and establish professional networks. In the final semesters, students focus on research methods, business management, and the application of therapeutic recreation interventions, culminating in a research project and advanced field placement. Through this comprehensive blend of theory, practical experience, and applied research, graduates develop the ability to assess client needs, design and deliver therapeutic programs, evaluate outcomes, and contribute effectively as skilled, evidence-informed therapeutic recreation practitioners.
