COURSE CURRICULUM

The Honours Bachelor of Mental Health and Addiction (BMHA) program offers a structured and comprehensive curriculum over eight semesters, designed to equip students with the knowledge and practical skills required for careers in mental health and addiction support. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge in community mental health, psychology, sociology, and effective communication, along with developing writing and interpersonal skills. The second year emphasizes diversity, resilience, social inclusion, counselling techniques, and Indigenous perspectives, preparing students to support the well-being of varied populations. In the third and fourth years, students advance into specialized areas, including therapeutic approaches, trauma-informed practices, crisis counselling, family dynamics, addictions, concurrent disorders, and community mental health policy, while engaging in research methods and applied statistics to strengthen evidence-informed practice. Work-integrated learning provides hands-on experience, allowing students to apply case management, assessment, and intervention strategies in real-world settings. The final year focuses on recovery-oriented practices, resilience, mental health promotion, ethical considerations, contemporary issues, and independent research projects, ensuring graduates are prepared to address complex mental health and addiction challenges. Throughout the program, students develop critical thinking, case management, counselling, and research skills, fostering the ability to deliver culturally sensitive, evidence-based interventions that support individuals, families, and communities in diverse mental health and addiction contexts.
