ABOUT UNIVERSITY
Sault College of Applied Arts and Technology is a publicly funded college located in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada. It traces its origins to 1965, when it opened as the Ontario Vocational Centre (OVC), part of a broader provincial initiative to provide vocational education in cities such as London and Ottawa. In 1967, the Ontario government established the system of Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology, evolving from the OVC model. Initially, Sault Ste. Marie’s OVC became a satellite campus of Cambrian College, based in Sudbury, alongside another satellite in North Bay. Rapid enrolment growth at these satellites led to their independence within five years, resulting in the formation of Sault College of Applied Arts and Technology in 1973, while the North Bay campus became Canadore College. Over the decades, Sault College has expanded its scope and programs, now serving more than 4,500 full-time and part-time students annually and offering a wide range of educational opportunities. These include post-secondary programs, apprenticeships, adult retraining, continuing education, and contract training. The college also partners with private institutions such as Trios College. Sault College provides education across diverse disciplines including aviation, business, health programs, information technology, engineering technology, skilled trades, marine engine training, culinary and hospitality, media and design, justice studies, native education, community services, and outdoor studies, among others. In recent years, the institution has focused on attracting international students, which significantly increased its budget derived from student fees between 2018 and 2024. However, in 2024, the college projected a 63 percent decline in foreign student enrolment, highlighting challenges in maintaining its international student base. Throughout its history, Sault College has played a vital role in meeting the educational and workforce needs of the region, growing from a small vocational centre to a comprehensive institution that blends practical training with academic learning while continuing to adapt to changing educational and economic demands.
