COURSE CURRICULUM

The three-year Agriculture and Food Production diploma program provides a comprehensive foundation in modern agriculture through a combination of classroom learning, hands-on labs, and co-operative work experiences. In the first year, students focus on fundamental skills, taking courses in agricultural machinery, agronomy, chemistry, geographic information systems, GPS basics, the history of agriculture in Western Canada, mathematics, safety systems, and workplace communication, totaling 25 credits in the first semester. The second semester continues with precision agriculture, agricultural business applications, introduction to agribusiness, entomology, principles of crop production, weed management, culture and diversity, professional ethics, and commodity marketing, again totaling 25 credits, followed by a paid co-operative work term. Year two expands technical expertise with courses in harvesting, hay and forage machinery, sustainable agriculture, food security, apiculture, irrigation, pesticide management, soil and crop nutrition, and water management, totaling 24 credits in the third semester. The fourth semester covers agricultural machinery 2, precision agriculture 2, business planning, beef and cattle production, rangeland management, agricultural economics, IoT applications in agriculture, commodity marketing 2, and Indigenous resource rights, totaling 25 credits, followed by two additional co-op work terms. In the final year, students focus on agricultural intelligence, grain handling, post-harvest production, globalization, business law, meteorology, innovation and leadership, a capstone project, and technical communication, completing 25 credits and preparing graduates for successful careers in agriculture and food production.
